James Horton [h.1.4.4.5]

James Horton was the fifth child of Joseph Hale Horton & Hannah Baker born April 1st, 1872 & christened July 4th, 1872 at Greasbrough, Yorks.

In 1881 James was living with his parents & brothers & sister at 3 Holm Flat Row, Greasbrough.

James was still living at home in 1891 with his family at the same address. He was working as a general labourer.

James married Sarah Perry on March 28th, 1896 at St James, Lower Gornall, Sedgley, Staffs. Sarah was christened April 26th, 1865 at Lower Gornall, the daughter of Maria & Isaac Perry, a coal miner.

In 1901 James & Sarah were living at 22 Wannop St, Rawmarsh, Rotherham, Yorks & James was a pit labourer. Living with them was Sarah’s widowed mother, Maria, aged 73.

James & Sarah were at 76 Bear Tree Rd, Parkgate, Rotherham in 1911 & James was described as a surface worker at the colliery. It was noted that they had had 2 children but both had died. They had listed with them a 6 year old boarder, Ernest Wilson, who had been born in Rotherham Union. It appears they may have taken in a child from the workhouse.

The children of James Horton & Sarah Perry were:

h.1.4.4.5.1  Joseph Arthur Horton born Oct-December 1899 at Rotherham

h.1.4.4.5.2 Willie Arnold Horton born Jan-March 1902 at Rotherham; died at 53 Wheatcroft Rd, Rawmarsh & buried January 20th, 1907 at St Mary the Virgin, Rawmarsh, Rotherham
